Multi-Cultural Traffic Safety Education

New Developments:

In New York State, injuries are the leading cause of hospitalization for children ages 10 to 14 and the leading cause of death for individuals ages 5 to 24. Traffic-related injuries account for a significant percentage of those injuries. In the Greater Capital District Region (GCDR)*, 420 pedestrians and 263 bicyclists were killed or injured in traffic crashes in 2000; 26% of the pedestrians and 50% of the bicyclists were 14 years old or under.

The goal of the Safety Central project is to reduce these traffic-related injuries and fatalities among our children. Safety City is a full-scale street with intersections that includes real traffic and pedestrian signals, street signs, pavement markings, railroad crossings and street furniture.

The facility and programs conducted at the site will be made available regionally to all elementary schools for age appropriate education in the following areas:

* Pedestrian Safety
* Bicycle/in-line/non motorized scooter safety
* School bus and school zone safety
* Railroad crossing safety
* Stranger awareness
